Song of the Depths

Deep beneath the waves, water folds and unfolds like crêpe paper.
Sunlight ripples through the depths, shimmering and scintillating, weaving threads of beauty into a tapestry of wonders. Swarms of jellyfish amble through, light exploding into color as it refracts through their translucent bodies.
The Witch of the Waves awakes among this reverie, her eyes still heavy with sleep. After all, it had taken half of yesterday and all of her patience to dissuade that love-mad little mermaid. She recalls the potion of forgetfulness she gave the girl, disguised as a salve that would let her walk among the surface folk. The sirens and serpents call the witch "Defender of the Deep". She thinks the nickname's well-deserved.
"I really mustn't sink any more ships," she thinks. After all, one never knows which of them might be carrying a handsome young prince, ready to disturb the peace of her sea.
